CVC Words — Answer Key
Part A: Multiple Choice
Circle the best answer for each question.
1. Which word does NOT belong in the -ob word family?
A) cob
B) sob
C) rob
D) rub
Rub ends with -ub, not -ob. Words in the -ob family end with the same sound, like sob and cob.
2. If you change the vowel in dab to u, what word do you get?
A) dub
B) dib
C) dob
D) deb
Dab has the short a sound. When you swap the a for u, you get dub, which keeps the same d and b.
3. Which word has the short e sound?
A) yam
B) rim
C) hem
D) cot
Hem has the short e sound in the middle: /h/-/e/-/m/. The other choices have different vowel sounds.
4. Which pair of CVC words rhyme?
A) vet and vat
B) hub and rub
C) jab and jig
D) cod and cud
Hub and rub both end with the -ub sound, so they rhyme. Words rhyme when their endings sound alike.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the correct answer on each line.
1. The words nub, hub, and rub all end with -ub.
Nub, hub, and rub all share the -ub ending. That means they are all in the -ub word family.
2. Change the first letter of vim to r to make the word rim.
Swapping the v in vim for an r gives you rim. Both words share the -im ending.
3. A CVC word that means to hit something gently is tap.
Tap means to touch or hit something lightly. It is a CVC word: t-a-p.
4. The last sound in the word yak is /k/.
Say yak slowly: /y/-/a/-/k/. The very last sound you hear is the /k/ sound.
5. Change the middle vowel in cot to u to make the word cut.
Changing the o in cot to a u gives you cut. The c and t stay the same; only the vowel changed.
