Social Studies in grades K–5 gives students a structured understanding of the world they live in — starting with their immediate community and expanding outward to their nation and its history. Young learners begin by reading map symbols, naming the continents and oceans, and identifying community helpers and the roles they play. As students progress, that framework fills in with depth: geography becomes regional analysis of the United States, civics moves from classroom rules to the Constitution and branches of government, economics grows from identifying jobs to understanding supply and demand, and history progresses from community helpers to the American Revolution, exploration, westward expansion, and the founding documents of the United States. Social Studies teaches students not just facts, but how societies are organized and why they work the way they do.

In kindergarten and first grade, students identify map symbols, locate continents and oceans, learn about community jobs and their importance, and discuss rules and responsibilities. Grade 2 formalizes this with map keys, community helpers, and civic responsibilities. Grade 3 introduces US geography and its regions, local and state government structures, foundational economics concepts, and Native American cultures. Grade 4 dives into American history with the Revolution, studies US regions and states in detail, examines state government and citizenship, and explores the role of natural resources and trade. Grade 5 completes the K–5 arc with westward expansion, the US Constitution, the Age of Exploration and colonization, and economic principles including supply and demand — giving students a full sweep of American civic and historical development.

Grade-by-Grade Progression
Grade 1: First graders build on the same foundational geography, community, and civics topics from kindergarten — reinforcing map reading, community helpers, continents and oceans, and the importance of rules and responsibilities with more detail and application.
Grade 2: Second graders formalize map skills with a focus on map keys and how to use them, revisit continents and oceans with greater precision, study community helpers across different sectors, and connect rules and responsibilities to real civic situations.
Grade 3: Third graders zoom in on the United States — exploring its geographic regions, understanding how local and state governments function, learning basic economics vocabulary and concepts, and studying Native American cultures and their contributions.
Grade 4: Fourth graders explore American history through the Revolution, develop a detailed geographic understanding of US regions and states, study state government and what it means to be a citizen, and examine how natural resources and trade shape economies.
Grade 5: Fifth graders complete the elementary social studies journey with westward expansion, a close look at the US Constitution and its principles, the story of European exploration and colonial America, and core economics concepts including supply and demand.
Kindergarten: Kindergartners explore their immediate world by learning to read map symbols and legends, identify the seven continents and five oceans, recognize community jobs and why they matter, and understand basic rules and responsibilities at school and home.
