English Language Arts at the K–5 level encompasses reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary — the full toolkit of literate communication. Students enter kindergarten learning to connect letters to sounds and decode simple CVC words, and they leave fifth grade analyzing an author's purpose, writing structured arguments, and comparing themes across texts. Along the way, they build comprehension strategies like finding the main idea, making inferences, and identifying cause and effect; they develop grammar knowledge from basic nouns and verbs through verb tenses, parts of speech, and comma rules; and they grow as writers through narrative, descriptive, opinion, and informational genres. ELA is not a single skill — it is a web of interlocking abilities that reinforce each other across every grade.

Kindergartners start with letter sounds, CVC word decoding, nouns, verbs, and simple narrative and descriptive writing. Grade 1 adds consonant blends and long vowel silent-e patterns, extending phonics into more complex words. In Grade 2, students distinguish common from proper nouns, use action verbs and adjectives, learn capitalization and punctuation rules, explore compound words, and write narrative pieces. Grade 3 introduces cause and effect, inference, subject-verb agreement, prefixes and suffixes, figurative language, opinion writing, and text features. Grade 4 deepens comprehension with summarizing and inferences, expands grammar to all parts of speech and verb tenses, introduces Greek and Latin roots, and builds informational and narrative writing skills. Grade 5 reaches the apex with author's purpose, theme analysis, argumentative writing, literary devices, comparing texts, research and citation, comma rules, and editing and revising.

Grade-by-Grade Progression
Grade 1: First graders build on kindergarten phonics by adding consonant blends and long vowel silent-e patterns, widening their ability to decode and read new words. All K-level reading and writing skills continue to develop with greater independence.
Grade 2: Second graders strengthen comprehension through main idea and sequencing practice, and expand grammar knowledge to include common and proper nouns, action verbs, adjectives, capitalization, and punctuation. They also explore compound words, practice sight words, and write narrative pieces with structure.
Grade 3: Third graders develop analytical reading skills including cause and effect, making inferences, and using text features and research skills. Grammar grows to include subject-verb agreement and types of sentences, while vocabulary work introduces prefixes, suffixes, and figurative language. Opinion writing and cursive practice are also introduced.
Grade 4: Fourth graders sharpen comprehension by summarizing main ideas and drawing inferences from complex texts. They study all parts of speech, explore verb tenses, build vocabulary through Greek and Latin roots and context clues, and write both informational and narrative pieces. Cursive fluency continues.
Grade 5: Fifth graders engage in literary analysis — identifying theme, author's purpose, literary devices, and comparing across texts. They write structured arguments, conduct research with citations, and apply advanced grammar including comma rules and roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Editing and revising skills round out their writing process.
Kindergarten: Kindergartners focus on phonics fundamentals — recognizing letters, matching letters to sounds, and reading simple CVC words. They also identify the main idea, practice sequencing, learn nouns and verbs, and write simple narrative and descriptive sentences.
