CVC Words — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. The sounds /n/ /u/ /b/ blend together to make the word nub.
Blending the sounds /n/, /u/, and /b/ smoothly together gives the word nub. Each sound stands for one letter: n-u-b.
2. Change the first letter of cod to r to make the word rod.
Take cod and swap the c for r, keeping the o and d the same. The new word is rod.
3. The word jab has three sounds: /j/, /a/, /b/.
The middle sound in jab is the short a sound, written /a/. So the three sounds are /j/, /a/, /b/.
4. A CVC word that means to pull hard is tug.
To pull hard on something is to tug. It is a CVC word with the sounds /t/, /u/, /g/.
5. Change the middle vowel in hum to a to make the word ham.
Replacing the u in hum with an a keeps the h and m in place and gives ham. The middle vowel changes the whole word.
6. The word rut belongs to the -ut word family.
Words in the -ut family end with the letters u-t, like rut, but, and cut. So rut belongs to the -ut family.
7. The sounds /w/ /a/ /d/ blend together to make the word wad.
Stretch and blend /w/, /a/, and /d/ together and you hear wad. The short a sits between the w and the d.
8. Change the last letter of gab to p to make the word gap.
Keep the g and a in gab and change the b to p. The new CVC word is gap.
9. A CVC word that means a small flying insect is bug.
A small flying insect with three sounds /b/, /u/, /g/ is a bug. It fits the C-V-C pattern.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
cod
→ a type of fish
a quick punch
jab
→ a quick punch
a groove in a road
rut
→ a groove in a road
a lump of soft stuff
wad
→ a lump of soft stuff
a type of fish
A cod is a kind of fish, a jab is a quick punch, a rut is a groove worn into a road, and a wad is a soft lump of stuff. Matching each word to its meaning gives those four pairs.
