Letter Recognition & Sounds — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. The word fish starts with the letter F.
The first sound you hear in fish is a /f/ made by biting your lip, and that sound is spelled with the letter F.
2. The letter C makes the /k/ sound in cat.
In the word cat, the beginning /k/ sound is spelled with the letter C, even though C can also sound like /s/ sometimes.
3. The word bell ends with the letter L.
Bell is spelled b-e-l-l with two L's at the end, so the very last letter in the word is L.
4. The vowel in the word pin is I.
The only vowel in pin is the short i in the middle; p and n are both consonants.
5. The letter W makes the /w/ sound.
The /w/ sound is the one you hear at the start of words like wind and water, and the letter W is what spells it.
6. The word dog starts with the letter D.
When you say dog, the first sound is /d/ made by tapping your tongue; that sound is written with the letter D.
7. The word run ends with the letter N.
The last sound in run is a /n/ hum, and that sound is spelled with the letter N.
8. The letter Z makes the /z/ sound.
The /z/ is a buzzing sound like a bee makes, and the letter Z is the one that spells it in words like zoo.
9. The vowel in the word cup is U.
Cup has three letters: c, u, and p; only u is a vowel, which makes the short /uh/ sound in the middle.

1. Match each item to its correct answer.
