Letter Recognition & Sounds — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. The word lamp starts with the letter L.
The first sound in lamp is /l/, which you make with your tongue behind your top teeth, and that is the letter L.
2. The letter R makes the /r/ sound.
The /r/ is the growling sound you hear in words like rain and run, and the letter R spells that sound.
3. The word hop ends with the letter P.
Say hop and listen to the last sound: it is a short /p/ pop of the lips, which is spelled with the letter P.
4. The vowel in the word bed is E.
Bed has three letters, b, e, and d; the only vowel among them is the short e in the middle.
5. The letter H makes the /h/ sound.
The /h/ is a soft breath of air, like when you fog up a mirror, and it is spelled with the letter H.
6. The word nest starts with the letter N.
A nest is where birds live, and when you say nest, the first sound is a /n/ hum from the letter N.
7. The word fog ends with the letter G.
Say fog out loud and the last sound is the hard /g/ made at the back of your throat, which is the letter G.
8. The letter V makes the /v/ sound.
The /v/ is a buzzy sound made by biting your lip, like at the start of van or vet, and it is spelled with the letter V.
9. The vowel in the word lot is O.
Lot has the short o sound in the middle between l and t; o is the only vowel in the word.
