Sequencing Events — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. First I put on my shoes. Then I go outside.
Getting the bread is the starting step because you need bread before you can add anything to it.
2. We read the book. Then we talk about it.
Adding jelly comes right after the peanut butter, so next shows it is the following step.
3. She woke up. Next she brushed her teeth. Then she ate.
Putting the slices together finishes the sandwich, so it is the final step.
4. The last thing he did was turn off the light.
Before means something already happened, so it points to an earlier moment in time.
5. Next comes after first in a sequence.
Listing the steps in order means going from the first step to the last so the listener can follow along.
6. I packed my bag. Then I walked to school.
Then and after that both tell us the next event in a sequence, so they mean the same thing.
7. We plant the seed first. Then we water it.
The peanut butter goes on the bread while it is open, so you must spread it before closing the sandwich.
8. At the end of the day, we go home.
Signal words like first, next, and last guide the reader through the sequence so they know what order things happen.
9. He opened the book and began to read the story.
The word finally means there are no more steps, so eating the sandwich is the last thing you do.
