Verbs — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. The cat can climb up the tree.
Baby and hands are naming words, but claps tells us what the baby is actually doing with her hands.
2. I brush my teeth every morning.
Stirs tells how he is moving the spoon round and round in the soup. It is the one word showing action.
3. We walk to school each day.
Verbs work for anyone doing something, and people do the most actions of all. So person fits — a verb tells what a person does.
4. She likes to read books.
Pours means tipping the carton so milk flows out into a glass. Milk is the thing, but pours is the action.
5. He will open the door.
Digs shows the boy scooping sand out to make a hole. Boy and sand are naming words — digs is the action word.
6. They play in the park.
In grammar, every word that names an action gets one special label — verb. So action word and verb mean the same thing.
7. The bird can fly in the sky.
Mop tells how we clean the floor — by pushing a wet mop around. Floor is a thing, but mop is the action we do to it.
8. I wash my hands before lunch.
Licks is the action the cat does with its tongue. Cat and paw are the names; licks is what is happening.
9. She will write a letter.
Cooks is what Dad does to make dinner hot and ready. Dad and dinner are the who and the what, but cooks is the action.
