Comparing Two-Digit Numbers (Greater/Less Than) — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. 52 > 25 (>, <, or =)
52 is greater than 25 because 5 tens is more than 2 tens. The digits are swapped, but 52 is still the bigger number.
2. 34 < 43 (>, <, or =)
34 is less than 43 because 3 tens is fewer than 4 tens. Even though the digits are the same, their place matters.
3. 67 = 67 (>, <, or =)
Both numbers are 67, with the same tens and ones. When two numbers match exactly, they are equal.
4. 19 < 91 (>, <, or =)
19 has only 1 ten, but 91 has 9 tens. That makes 19 much less than 91.
5. 78 > 72 (>, <, or =)
Both numbers have 7 tens, so look at the ones. 8 ones is more than 2 ones, making 78 greater than 72.
6. 46 < 64 (>, <, or =)
46 has 4 tens and 64 has 6 tens. Since 4 tens is less than 6 tens, 46 is the smaller number.
7. 55 = 55 (>, <, or =)
Both sides show 55, so they are equal. The tens and ones digits both match.
8. 83 > 38 (>, <, or =)
83 has 8 tens and 38 has only 3 tens, so 83 is much greater than 38.
9. 21 < 29 (>, <, or =)
Both have 2 tens, so check the ones. 1 one is less than 9 ones, making 21 less than 29.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
greater than
→ >
the same amount
less than
→ <
>
equal to
→ the same amount
to look at two numbers
compare
→ to look at two numbers
<
The > sign means greater than, the < sign means less than, equal to means the same amount, and compare means to look at two numbers to see which is bigger or smaller.
