Comparing Two-Digit Numbers (Greater/Less Than) — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. 31 > 13 (>, <, or =)
31 has 3 tens and 13 has only 1 ten. Since 3 tens is more than 1 ten, 31 is greater than 13.
2. 47 < 74 (>, <, or =)
47 has 4 tens and 74 has 7 tens. Since 4 tens is less than 7 tens, 47 is the smaller number.
3. 58 = 58 (>, <, or =)
Both numbers are 58 with the same tens and ones, so they are equal.
4. 62 > 26 (>, <, or =)
62 has 6 tens while 26 has only 2 tens. More tens means a bigger number, so 62 is greater.
5. 39 < 93 (>, <, or =)
39 has 3 tens and 93 has 9 tens. The digits look reversed, but 39 is much less than 93.
6. 85 > 58 (>, <, or =)
85 has 8 tens and 58 has 5 tens. Since 8 tens beats 5 tens, 85 is the greater number.
7. 44 = 44 (>, <, or =)
Both sides show 44. The tens and ones digits match perfectly, so the numbers are equal.
8. 16 < 61 (>, <, or =)
16 has only 1 ten, but 61 has 6 tens. That makes 16 much less than 61.
9. 72 > 27 (>, <, or =)
72 has 7 tens while 27 has just 2 tens. More tens means a bigger value, so 72 is greater.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
>
→ is greater than
is equal to
<
→ is less than
is greater than
=
→ is equal to
less amount
fewer
→ less amount
is less than
The > symbol means "is greater than," < means "is less than," = means "is equal to," and fewer means a smaller amount.
