Counting Coins — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the correct number on each line.
1. 1 dime + 1 nickel = 15 cents.
A dime = 10 cents and a nickel = 5 cents, so 10 + 5 = 15 cents.
2. 1 quarter + 1 penny = 26 cents.
A quarter = 25 cents and a penny = 1 cent, so 25 + 1 = 26 cents.
3. 2 dimes + 1 nickel = 25 cents.
2 dimes = 20 cents and 1 nickel = 5 cents, so 20 + 5 = 25 cents.
4. 1 nickel + 3 pennies = 8 cents.
A nickel = 5 cents and 3 pennies = 3 cents, so 5 + 3 = 8 cents.
5. 1 dime + 2 pennies = 12 cents.
A dime = 10 cents and 2 pennies = 2 cents, so 10 + 2 = 12 cents.
6. 1 quarter + 1 nickel = 30 cents.
A quarter = 25 cents and a nickel = 5 cents, so 25 + 5 = 30 cents.
7. A dime is worth 5 cents more than a nickel.
A dime = 10 cents and a nickel = 5 cents. The difference is 10 - 5 = 5 cents.
8. A quarter is worth 15 cents more than a dime.
A quarter = 25 cents and a dime = 10 cents. The difference is 25 - 10 = 15 cents.
9. 2 nickels + 2 pennies = 12 cents.
2 nickels = 10 cents and 2 pennies = 2 cents, so 10 + 2 = 12 cents.
Part B: Match
Draw a line from each coin group on the left to its total value on the right.
1.
1 quarter + 1 penny
→ 26 cents
21 cents
2 dimes + 1 penny
→ 21 cents
15 cents
1 dime + 1 nickel + 1 penny
→ 16 cents
26 cents
3 nickels
→ 15 cents
16 cents
1 quarter + 1 penny = 25 + 1 = 26 cents. 2 dimes + 1 penny = 20 + 1 = 21 cents. 1 dime + 1 nickel + 1 penny = 10 + 5 + 1 = 16 cents. 3 nickels = 3 x 5 = 15 cents.
