Counting Coins — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the correct number on each line.
1. 1 dime + 1 penny = 11 cents.
A dime = 10 cents and a penny = 1 cent, so 10 + 1 = 11 cents.
2. 1 quarter + 1 dime = 35 cents.
A quarter = 25 cents and a dime = 10 cents, so 25 + 10 = 35 cents.
3. 2 nickels + 1 dime = 20 cents.
2 nickels = 10 cents and 1 dime = 10 cents, so 10 + 10 = 20 cents.
4. 1 quarter + 2 pennies = 27 cents.
A quarter = 25 cents and 2 pennies = 2 cents, so 25 + 2 = 27 cents.
5. 3 dimes + 1 penny = 31 cents.
3 dimes = 30 cents and 1 penny = 1 cent, so 30 + 1 = 31 cents.
6. 1 nickel + 4 pennies = 9 cents.
A nickel = 5 cents and 4 pennies = 4 cents, so 5 + 4 = 9 cents.
7. A quarter is worth 20 cents more than a nickel.
A quarter = 25 cents and a nickel = 5 cents. The difference is 25 - 5 = 20 cents.
8. 2 dimes + 3 pennies = 23 cents.
2 dimes = 20 cents and 3 pennies = 3 cents, so 20 + 3 = 23 cents.
9. 1 dime + 1 nickel + 2 pennies = 17 cents.
A dime = 10 cents, a nickel = 5 cents, and 2 pennies = 2 cents, so 10 + 5 + 2 = 17 cents.
Part B: Match
Draw a line from each coin group on the left to its total value on the right.
1.
1 quarter + 1 nickel + 1 penny
→ 31 cents
36 cents
2 dimes + 2 nickels
→ 30 cents
13 cents
1 dime + 3 pennies
→ 13 cents
31 cents
1 quarter + 1 dime + 1 penny
→ 36 cents
30 cents
1 quarter + 1 nickel + 1 penny = 25 + 5 + 1 = 31 cents. 2 dimes + 2 nickels = 20 + 10 = 30 cents. 1 dime + 3 pennies = 10 + 3 = 13 cents. 1 quarter + 1 dime + 1 penny = 25 + 10 + 1 = 36 cents.
