Fact Families (Addition & Subtraction to 20) — Answer Key
Part A: Trace the Words
Trace each word carefully by following the dotted lines.
1. parts
2. minus
3. fact
4. sum
5. add
6. family
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. 6 + 8 = 14
Start with 8 (the bigger number) and count up 6 more to reach 14. Using the bigger number first makes counting faster.
2. 8 + 6 = 14
Because addition can be flipped, 8 + 6 gives the same total as 6 + 8, which is 14. These are turn-around facts in the same fact family.
3. 14 - 6 = 8
If you take the 6 part away from the whole of 14, only the 8 part is left. Subtraction is how we split the whole back into its two parts.
4. 14 - 8 = 6
Remove the 8 part from 14 and you are left with 6, the other part. This finishes the four equations in the 6, 8, 14 fact family.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. 2 + 9 = 11 is in the same fact family as 11 - 2 = 9.
True False
True, because the same three numbers 2, 9, and 11 appear in both equations. The subtraction fact simply undoes the addition fact.
2. 7 + 5 = 12 is in the same fact family as 12 - 6 = 6.
True False
False, because 12 - 6 = 6 uses 6 twice and leaves out the 7 and 5 from the original fact. A fact family must share all three of the same numbers.
3. 8 + 4 = 12 is in the same fact family as 12 - 4 = 8.
True False
True, because both equations use the numbers 4, 8, and 12. Taking the part 4 away from the whole 12 gives back the other part, 8.
