Partitioning Shapes: Halves and Fourths — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A rectangle is cut into 4 equal parts. Each part is called a fourth.
When a shape is divided into 4 equal parts, each part is one fourth.
2. 3 fourths of 12 is 9.
One fourth of 12 is 3, so 3 fourths is 3 times 3, which equals 9.
3. Which is bigger: one half or one fourth? one half.
One half is bigger because dividing into 2 parts gives larger pieces than dividing into 4 parts.
4. A shape has 4 equal parts. How many parts make a whole? 4.
All 4 equal parts together make 1 whole.
5. Half of 14 is 7.
14 divided by 2 equals 7.
6. One fourth of 16 is 4.
16 divided by 4 equals 4.
7. If 3 out of 4 equal parts are shaded, 1 fourth is NOT shaded.
4 parts minus 3 shaded parts leaves 1 part not shaded.
8. Two fourths is the same as one half.
Two fourths equals one half because 2 out of 4 equal parts is the same as 1 out of 2 equal parts.
9. A circle is divided into 2 unequal parts. Are they halves? No.
Halves must be 2 equal parts. Unequal parts are not halves.
Part B: Match
Draw a line from each description on the left to its match on the right.
1.
2 equal parts
→ halves
5
4 equal parts
→ fourths
fourths
Half of 10
→ 5
2
One fourth of 8
→ 2
halves
2 equal parts are called halves. 4 equal parts are called fourths. 10 divided by 2 equals 5. 8 divided by 4 equals 2.
