Partitioning Shapes: Halves and Fourths — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A pie is cut into 2 equal slices. Each slice is one half.
When something is divided into 2 equal parts, each part is called one half.
2. Half of 18 is 9.
18 divided by 2 equals 9.
3. One fourth of 20 is 5.
20 divided by 4 equals 5.
4. A square is divided into 4 equal parts. 2 parts are shaded. 2 fourths are shaded.
2 out of 4 equal parts are shaded, so 2 fourths are shaded.
5. Which is smaller: one half or one fourth? one fourth.
One fourth is smaller because dividing into 4 parts gives smaller pieces than dividing into 2 parts.
6. 3 fourths of 8 is 6.
One fourth of 8 is 2, so 3 fourths is 3 times 2, which equals 6.
7. A rectangle has 2 equal parts. Both parts together make 1 whole.
Two equal parts (two halves) put together make exactly 1 whole.
8. If a square is cut into 4 unequal pieces, the pieces are NOT fourths.
Fourths require 4 equal parts. Unequal pieces cannot be called fourths.
9. Half of 20 is 10.
20 divided by 2 equals 10.
Part B: Match
Draw a line from each description on the left to its match on the right.
1.
Half of 12
→ 6
fourths
One fourth of 16
→ 4
halves
2 equal parts are called
→ halves
6
4 equal parts are called
→ fourths
4
12 divided by 2 equals 6. 16 divided by 4 equals 4. Two equal parts are called halves. Four equal parts are called fourths.
