1. Leo had 10 grapes. He ate some and has 4 left. How many did Leo eat?

Lily starts with 10 and eats 3. Counting back from 10 three times lands on 7 — that's how many grapes are still on the plate.
2. There are 9 ducks in a pond. Some swim away and 3 stay. How many swam away?
A) 5
B) 7
C) 6

4 out of the 6 ducks leave the pond. That means 6 - 4 = 2 ducks are still floating there.
3. If 8 - 2 = 6, what is 8 - 6?
A) 3
B) 4
C) 2
D) 1
Jake misplaced 5 of his 8 cars. He still has 8 - 5 = 3 cars he can play with.
4. Ava has 7 stickers. She uses 4 on her notebook. How many stickers are left?
A) 2
B) 4
C) 3
D) 5
Mom grabbed 6 of the 9 cookies. That leaves only 9 - 6 = 3 cookies sitting on the plate.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the correct answer on each line.
1. 9 - 7 = 2
Subtracting 1 gives you the number just before. The number right before 10 is 9.
2. 10 - 7 = 3
Any number minus itself is 0. If you had 7 and took all 7 away, your group is empty.
3. 5 - 4 = 1
8 is only one step short of 9. So taking 8 away from 9 leaves just 1.
4. 8 - 8 = 0
Subtracting 0 means taking nothing away. The 5 you started with is still all 5.
5. 10 - 6 = 4
8 is just 4 + 4. Remove one group of 4 and the other group of 4 remains.
