Subtraction Within 10 — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. 10 - 9 = 1
We need to get from 10 down to 1. That is a drop of 9 steps, so the missing number is 9.
2. 9 - 4 = 5
Put the 4 and the 5 back together to find the start: 4 + 5 = 9. That is the number you subtracted from.
3. 8 - 4 = 4
Getting from 8 to 4 means cutting it in half. Half of 8 is 4, so you took 4 away.
4. 10 - 7 = 3
Add 7 and 3 to undo the subtraction: 7 + 3 = 10. The number you started with was 10.
5. 6 - 6 = 0
To land on 0, you must take away everything. There were 6 to start, so 6 have to leave.
6. 7 - 2 = 5
Before the 2 were taken away, the pile was 5 + 2 big. That sum is 7, so the blank is 7.
7. 9 - 3 = 6
From 9 down to 6 is just 3 hops on the number line. So 3 is the amount that got taken away.
8. 7 - 1 = 6
If taking away 1 leaves 6, then before the 1 left there were 6 + 1 = 7 in the group.
9. 10 - 2 = 8
Going from 10 to 8 is a small jump of just 2 spots. So only 2 were taken away.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
9 - 2
→ 7
2
10 - 4
→ 6
7
8 - 1
→ 9
6
7 - 5
→ 2
9
Work out each subtraction to find its partner. Count back on your fingers or the number line, then draw a line from each problem to its matching answer.
