Subtraction Within 10 — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. 7 - 5 = 2
Think: what takes 7 down to 2? The gap between them is 5, so you subtracted 5.
2. 9 - 3 = 6
Add the 3 back onto the 6 to rebuild the start: 3 + 6 = 9. The missing number is 9.
3. 10 - 3 = 7
10 and 7 are 3 steps apart, so 3 is what got taken away.
4. 10 - 8 = 2
If taking 8 away leaves 2, then you started with 8 + 2 = 10.
5. 9 - 8 = 1
Getting from 9 down to just 1 is a big drop — 8 steps. So 8 is the missing subtractor.
6. 6 - 4 = 2
To find the start, add the parts: 4 + 2 = 6. The beginning pile had 6 in it.
7. 8 - 3 = 5
8 minus what equals 5? The distance from 8 back to 5 is 3, so the answer is 3.
8. 9 - 6 = 3
Use the matching addition: 6 + 3 = 9. That tells you the starting number was 9.
9. 10 - 6 = 4
10 and 4 are 6 apart. That means you took 6 off the top of 10.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
10 - 1
→ 9
3
8 - 4
→ 4
9
6 - 3
→ 3
4
9 - 5
→ 6
6
Pair each subtraction with its result. For each problem, count back from the bigger number or think of the addition partner, then connect it to the matching answer.
