Compound Words — Answer Key
Part A: Sort the Words
Sort each word or number into the correct category box.
1. Sort each word: compound word or not a compound word.
Compound Word
moonlightseashellsidewalk Not a Compound Word
rabbityellowblanket Moonlight holds the words moon and light, seashell holds sea and shell, and sidewalk holds side and walk, so each one is a compound word. Rabbit, yellow, and blanket cannot be chopped into two smaller words, so they are plain words instead.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. Moonlight is made from moon and light.
Moonlight is the bright glow of light that comes from the moon. The word takes moon plus light and joins them to describe exactly that.
2. Sea + shell = seashell.
Adding sea and shell makes seashell, which names the shells we find washed up from the sea. Each tiny word keeps its own meaning inside the new word.
3. The two parts of sidewalk are side and walk.
A sidewalk is a path on the side of the road where people walk. Hearing side and walk together shows you the two smaller words that build it.
4. When two small words join, they make a compound word.
The word compound means to put things together. That is why any word made by putting two smaller words together is called a compound word.
5. Side + walk = sidewalk.
Sticking side and walk together gives you sidewalk. The new word names the safe path on the side of the street where people walk.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. Seashell is a compound word.
True False
True — you can pull seashell apart into sea and shell, and both pieces are real words. That double-word structure makes it a compound word.
2. Blanket is a compound word.
True False
False — blanket cannot be broken into two real words. Blan and ket have no meaning on their own, so blanket is just one plain word.
3. Moonlight is made from moon and light.
True False
True — the word moon and the word light are both hiding inside moonlight. Together they describe the silver light we see from the moon at night.
4. Only long words can be compound words.
True False
False — length does not matter for compound words. Short words like cupcake or sunset are still compound because they are built from two smaller words joined together.
