Handwriting: Words and Sentences — Answer Key
Part A: Sort the Words
Sort each word or number into the correct category box.
1. Sort each letter into uppercase or lowercase.
Uppercase (Capital) Letters
BRG Lowercase (Small) Letters
msf B, R, and G are written in their larger capital shapes used at the start of sentences and names. The letters m, s, and f are drawn in their smaller lowercase shapes used inside most words.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. An uppercase letter is also called a capital letter.
Uppercase and capital are two names for the same bigger letters like A, B, C. You use a capital letter for names, the word I, and the first letter of a sentence.
2. Lowercase letters are usually smaller than uppercase letters.
Lowercase letters like a and b fit in the lower half of the lines, while capitals A and B stretch all the way to the top. That difference in height makes lowercase smaller.
3. We use an uppercase letter at the start of a person's name.
People's names are special words called proper nouns. They always begin with a capital, like Maria or Ben, to show they name a specific person.
4. When copying a sentence from the board, write each word in order.
A sentence only makes sense when words follow the same sequence as on the board. Mixing up the order would change or break the meaning.
5. The margin is the blank space on the left side of the paper.
The margin is an empty strip of paper with no writing in it, often marked by a red line. This clear space gives every line of writing the same starting point.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. A capital B is taller than a lowercase b.
True False
Capital B stretches from the baseline all the way to the top line. Lowercase b has a shorter round part that only fills the lower portion, so B really is taller.
2. You should write your name starting with a lowercase letter.
True False
Names are proper nouns and must begin with a capital letter, like Emma or Jake. Starting your name with a lowercase letter would be a writing mistake.
3. The margin helps keep your writing lined up neatly.
True False
The margin line gives every row of writing the same starting place on the left. That straight edge makes your page look tidy and easy to read.
4. Every word in a sentence must start with a capital letter.
True False
Only the first word, names, and the word I get capitals. Other words like cat or runs stay lowercase inside the sentence.
