Even & Odd Numbers — Answer Key
Part A: Sort the Words
Sort each word or number into the correct category box.
1. Sort each number: even or odd.
Even
221628 Odd
7313 Look at the last digit of every number. 22, 16, and 28 end in 2, 6, and 8, so they join the even group, while 7, 31, and 3 end in 7, 1, and 3 and land in the odd group.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. The number 30 is an even number.
30 ends in 0, which is an even digit, so 30 is even. You can also share 30 equally between two groups of 15.
2. An even number always ends in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.
The five even digits are 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8, so the missing one is 8. Any number with one of these digits at the end is even.
3. The next odd number after 17 is 19.
Odd numbers count up by 2, so after 17 you skip the even 18 and land on 19. Both 17 and 19 end in odd digits.
4. The number 15 is an odd number.
15 ends in 5, which is an odd digit, so 15 is odd. If you tried to split 15 things into two equal groups, one group would have 7 and the other 8.
5. If you have 6 apples and share equally with a friend, each person gets 3.
6 is even, so it splits cleanly into two equal groups. Since 3 + 3 = 6, each person gets 3 apples.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. The number 10 is an even number.
True False
10 ends in 0, which is an even digit, so 10 really is even. You can also split 10 into two equal groups of 5.
2. The number 19 is an even number.
True False
19 ends in 9, which is an odd digit, so 19 is actually odd, not even. Only numbers ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 are even.
3. Odd numbers can be split into two equal groups.
True False
Odd numbers always leave one piece left over when you try to split them into two equal groups. For example, 7 splits into 3 and 3 with one extra.
4. The number 24 ends in 4, so it is even.
True False
4 is one of the even digits (0, 2, 4, 6, 8), so any number ending in 4 is even. 24 also splits into two equal groups of 12.
