Even and Odd Numbers — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A number is even if it can be divided into two equal groups.
Splitting a number into two equal groups with nothing left over is exactly what makes it even. That fair-share idea is the definition of an even number.
2. The ones digit of every even number is 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.
The ones digit of an even number is always 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8. The digit 8 completes that list.
3. The number 53 is odd because it ends in 3.
Any number whose ones digit is 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 is odd, and 53 ends in 3, so 53 is odd.
4. The number 78 is even because it ends in 8.
78 ends in 8, and numbers ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 are even, so 78 is even.
5. If you have 14 apples, you can make two equal groups of 7.
14 apples split as 7 + 7 = 14, which is two equal groups of 7. That is exactly what it means for 14 to be even.
6. The ones digit of every odd number is 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9.
Odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9, and 9 is the largest one-digit ending that makes a number odd.
7. The number 100 is even.
100 ends in 0, and a number ending in 0 can be split into two equal groups (50 + 50), so 100 is even.
8. An odd number plus one always equals an even number.
Adding 1 to an odd number gives the very next counting number, which is always even — for example, 5 + 1 = 6 and 9 + 1 = 10.
9. The number 41 is odd because it ends in 1.
41 ends in 1, and 1 is one of the odd ones digits (1, 3, 5, 7, 9), so 41 is odd.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
36
→ Even, ends in 6
Odd, ends in 9
59
→ Odd, ends in 9
Even, ends in 6
84
→ Even, ends in 4
Odd, ends in 7
17
→ Odd, ends in 7
Even, ends in 4
Look at the ones digit of each number to decide. 36 ends in 6 so it is even, 59 ends in 9 so it is odd, 84 ends in 4 so it is even, and 17 ends in 7 so it is odd.
