Even and Odd Numbers — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. You can make two equal groups of 5 from 10.
Two equal groups of 5 is 5 + 5, which equals 10. So 10 is the number that makes those groups.
2. Counting by 2s starting from 0 always lands on even numbers.
Counting by 2s from 0 gives 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and so on. Every one of those numbers ends in an even digit, so they are all even.
3. You cannot split 7 into two equal whole groups.
7 cannot be shared into two equal whole groups because no whole number doubled gives 7 (3 + 3 = 6 and 4 + 4 = 8). That is why 7 is odd.
4. The next even number after 24 is 26.
Even numbers step up by 2, so the next even number after 24 is 24 + 2 = 26.
5. The next odd number after 35 is 37.
Odd numbers also step up by 2, so the next odd number after 35 is 35 + 2 = 37.
6. Skip counting by 2 from 1 gives 1, 3, 5, 7, which are all odd.
Skip-counting by 2 from 1 lands on 1, 3, 5, 7. Each number ends in 1, 3, 5, or 7, which are all odd ones digits.
7. If you put 18 blocks in two equal rows, each row has 9.
Splitting 18 into two equal rows means 18 ÷ 2 = 9, so each row has 9 blocks.
8. The number just before 50 is 49 and it is odd.
The number just before 50 is 50 − 1 = 49, and 49 ends in 9, which makes it odd.
9. An even number of socks can always be sorted into pairs.
An even number of socks can be matched up two at a time with none left lonely, so every sock has a partner — that is what a pair means.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
12 apples in 2 bags
→ Even, 6 in each bag
Odd, cannot split equally
9 toys shared by 2 kids
→ Odd, cannot split equally
Even, 10 in each box
20 pencils in 2 boxes
→ Even, 10 in each box
Even, 6 in each bag
15 stickers for 2 friends
→ Odd, one friend gets more
Odd, one friend gets more
Even amounts split into two equal groups, but odd amounts always leave one extra. 12 ÷ 2 = 6 in each bag, 20 ÷ 2 = 10 in each box, but 9 and 15 are odd, so they cannot be shared evenly between 2.
