Fractions: Halves, Thirds, and Fourths — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. One-fourth of 8 is 2.
Splitting 8 into 4 equal groups gives 8 ÷ 4 = 2 in each group, so one-fourth of 8 is 2.
2. One-third of 9 is 3.
One-third of 9 means dividing 9 into 3 equal groups, and 9 ÷ 3 = 3 in each group.
3. One-half of 10 is 5.
Half of 10 is found by splitting 10 into 2 equal groups, and 10 ÷ 2 = 5 in each group.
4. One-third of 6 is 2.
Dividing 6 into 3 equal groups gives 6 ÷ 3 = 2 in each group, so one-third of 6 is 2.
5. One-half of 4 is 2.
One-half of 4 means splitting 4 into 2 equal groups, and 4 ÷ 2 = 2 in each group.
6. One-fourth of 12 is 3.
Splitting 12 into 4 equal groups gives 12 ÷ 4 = 3 in each group, so one-fourth of 12 is 3.
7. One-half of 8 is 4.
Half of 8 is found by dividing 8 into 2 equal groups, and 8 ÷ 2 = 4 in each group.
8. The fraction 12 is the largest: 12, 13, or 14.
When the same whole is split into more pieces, each piece is smaller, so 12 (just 2 pieces) is the largest of 12, 13, and 14.
9. One-third of 12 is 4.
Splitting 12 into 3 equal groups gives 12 ÷ 3 = 4 in each group, so one-third of 12 is 4.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
12 of 6
→ 3
5
13 of 12
→ 4
2
14 of 8
→ 2
3
12 of 10
→ 5
4
Each match comes from sharing the number into equal groups: 12 of 6 is 3 (6 ÷ 2), 13 of 12 is 4 (12 ÷ 3), 14 of 8 is 2 (8 ÷ 4), and 12 of 10 is 5 (10 ÷ 2).
