Fractions: Halves, Thirds, and Fourths — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A square is divided into 4 equal parts. One part is shaded. The fraction shaded is 14.
The bottom number 4 shows how many equal parts the square is split into, and the top number 1 shows how many are shaded. So 1 out of 4 equal parts is 14.
2. A circle is split into 2 equal parts. Both parts are shaded. The fraction shaded is 22.
The bottom number 2 stands for the 2 equal parts, and the top number 2 shows that both are shaded. 22 also means the whole circle is shaded.
3. One-half of 16 crayons is 8 crayons.
One-half means splitting 16 crayons into 2 equal groups. Since 8 + 8 = 16, each group gets 8 crayons.
4. One-fourth of 16 crayons is 4 crayons.
One-fourth means splitting 16 crayons into 4 equal groups, and 16 divided by 4 equals 4. Each group has 4 crayons.
5. A rectangle is divided into 3 equal parts. Two parts are shaded. The fraction shaded is 23.
The bottom number 3 tells us the rectangle has 3 equal parts, and the top number 2 counts the shaded ones. Two out of three equal parts shaded is written as 23.
6. One-third of 15 marbles is 5 marbles.
One-third means splitting 15 marbles into 3 equal groups, and 15 divided by 3 equals 5. Each group gets 5 marbles.
7. A triangle divided into 2 equal parts has each part equal to one half.
When any shape is split into 2 equal parts, each part is called one-half. The two halves of the triangle match exactly and make up the whole shape.
8. One-fourth of 20 buttons is 5 buttons.
One-fourth means splitting 20 buttons into 4 equal groups, and 20 divided by 4 equals 5. Each group has 5 buttons.
9. The top number in a fraction tells how many parts are shaded.
The top number, called the numerator, counts how many of the equal parts are shaded or being used. The bottom number tells you how many equal parts the whole has in all.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
one-half
→ 12
13
one-third
→ 13
34
one-fourth
→ 14
12
three-fourths
→ 34
14
Correct matches: one-half → 12; one-third → 13; one-fourth → 14; three-fourths → 34.
