Fractions: Halves, Thirds, and Fourths — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. Sam has 12 toy cars. He gives one-third to his sister. He gives away 4 cars.
One-third of 12 means splitting 12 cars into 3 equal groups, and 12 divided by 3 equals 4. Sam hands his sister one of those groups, which is 4 cars.
2. A watermelon is cut into 4 equal slices. Each slice is one fourth of the watermelon.
When something is divided into 4 equal parts, each part is called one-fourth. Together, all 4 fourths add up to the whole watermelon.
3. One-half of 18 beads is 9 beads.
One-half means splitting 18 beads into 2 equal groups. Since 9 + 9 = 18, each group contains 9 beads.
4. A rope cut into 3 equal pieces gives 3 thirds.
Each equal piece of a whole split into 3 is called one third, so 3 equal pieces means 3 thirds. Those 3 thirds put back together make the whole rope again.
5. One-fourth of 24 seeds is 6 seeds.
One-fourth means splitting 24 seeds into 4 equal groups, and 24 divided by 4 equals 6. Each group holds 6 seeds.
6. If a brownie is split equally between 2 people, each person gets one half.
Sharing one brownie fairly with 2 people means cutting it into 2 equal pieces. Each piece is called one-half, and the two halves match in size.
7. One-third of 18 blocks is 6 blocks.
One-third means splitting 18 blocks into 3 equal groups, and 18 divided by 3 equals 6. Each group has 6 blocks.
8. Two halves of a pizza make one whole pizza.
Two halves put together rebuild the original pizza with nothing missing, which is what whole means. That is why 12 + 12 equals 1 whole.
9. One-half of 20 pennies is 10 pennies.
One-half means splitting 20 pennies into 2 equal groups. Since 10 + 10 = 20, each group has 10 pennies.
