Graphs and Data — Answer Key
Part A: Sort the Words
Sort each word or number into the correct category box.
1. A class voted on favorite colors. Sort each color by its number of votes.
More Than 5 Students
red: 7blue: 9purple: 8 5 or Fewer Students
green: 3yellow: 5orange: 2 Red (7), blue (9), and purple (8) all have counts above 5, so they belong in the larger group. Green (3), yellow (5), and orange (2) are 5 or fewer, which puts them in the smaller group.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. The most popular color is blue.
Blue had 9 votes, the highest count in the survey. The color with the most votes is the most popular one.
2. How many more chose blue than green? 6.
Blue got 9 votes and green got 3 votes, and 9 - 3 = 6. Subtracting the smaller count from the larger one shows the difference.
3. A bar graph uses bars to show data.
A bar graph uses rectangles of different heights to show how many of each thing there are. The bars make it easy to compare groups at a glance.
4. The total number of students surveyed is 34.
Adding all the votes gives 7 + 9 + 3 + 5 + 8 + 2 = 34. The total number surveyed is the sum of every group on the graph.
5. A graph key tells us what each picture or bar represents.
A graph key is a small legend that explains what each symbol stands for. On a pictograph, each picture or bar represents a certain number of items.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. Purple was chosen by more students than red.
True False
True. Purple had 8 votes and red had 7, so purple was chosen by more students.
2. Green and orange together equal 5.
True False
True. Green had 3 and orange had 2, and 3 + 2 = 5, so together they equal 5.
3. Yellow was the least popular color.
True False
False. Yellow got 5 votes, but orange got only 2, so orange was the least popular color.
4. Blue got fewer votes than purple.
True False
False. Blue got 9 votes and purple got 8, so blue actually got more, not fewer.
