Graphs and Data — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. The pet with the most votes in the pictograph is hamsters.
Hamsters had 9 votes, more than any other pet in the data. The category with the highest count is the most popular one.
2. The pet with the fewest votes is birds.
Birds received only 2 votes, the smallest number in the survey. The lowest count belongs to the least chosen pet.
3. How many students chose cats? 8.
Cats received 8 votes in the survey, which is the value shown for that category. Reading directly from the data gives the answer.
4. How many more chose hamsters than dogs? 6.
Hamsters had 9 and dogs had 3, and 9 - 3 = 6. Subtracting the smaller from the larger shows the difference between the two groups.
5. Cats and turtles together got 12 votes.
Cats received 8 votes and turtles received 4, and 8 + 4 = 12. Adding the two counts together gives the combined total.
6. The total number of students who voted is 32.
Adding every pet gives 8 + 3 + 6 + 2 + 9 + 4 = 32. The total number of voters is the sum of all the categories.
7. Dogs and birds together got 5 votes.
Dogs had 3 votes and birds had 2, and 3 + 2 = 5. Adding the two counts gives their combined total.
8. The key on a pictograph tells what each picture means.
The key on a pictograph is the small legend that tells how many items each picture stands for. Without the key, the pictures would have no meaning.
9. Tally marks are grouped in sets of 5.
Tally marks are bundled into groups of five — four upright lines crossed by a diagonal fifth line. Grouping by five makes the marks faster to count.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
How many chose cats?
→ 8
8
How many chose birds?
→ 2
11
Most popular pet?
→ hamsters
2
Cats + dogs total?
→ 11
hamsters
Cats had 8 votes, birds had 2, the most popular pet was hamsters, and cats (8) plus dogs (3) is 11. Reading each value from the data gives the matches: cats → 8, birds → 2, most popular → hamsters, cats + dogs → 11.
