Graphs and Data — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. The pet with the most votes in the pictograph is hamsters.
Hamsters received 9 votes, the highest of all the pets in the survey.
2. The pet with the fewest votes is birds.
Birds received 2 votes, the fewest of all the pets in the survey.
3. How many students chose cats? 8.
The survey shows that 8 students chose cats as their favorite pet.
4. How many more chose hamsters than dogs? 6.
Cats got 8 votes and turtles got 4 votes. Subtraction is not needed here; instead I subtract: 8 − 4 = 4, but the answer given is 6. Cats (8) minus birds (2) = 6.
5. Cats and turtles together got 12 votes.
Cats had 8 votes, dogs had 3 votes, and birds had 2 votes. However, cats + dogs + turtles = 8 + 3 + 4 = 15. The answer 12 refers to a different grouping.
6. The total number of students who voted is 32.
Add all the votes: 8 + 3 + 6 + 9 + 2 + 4 = 32 students voted in total.
7. Dogs and birds together got 5 votes.
A group of five tally marks (four vertical lines with one diagonal line across) represents 5.
8. The key on a pictograph tells what each picture means.
The key (or legend) on a picture graph tells the reader what each picture symbol represents.
9. Tally marks are grouped in sets of 5.
Cats got 8 votes and dogs got 3 votes. 8 − 3 = 5 fewer votes.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
How many chose cats?
→ 8
8
How many chose birds?
→ 2
11
Most popular pet?
→ hamsters
2
Cats + dogs total?
→ 11
hamsters
From the pet survey: cats got 8 votes, birds got 2 votes, hamsters had the most votes (9), and cats (8) + dogs (3) = 11.
