Graphs and Data — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. The sport with the most tally marks is soccer.
Soccer shows 9 tally marks, which is the highest count on the chart. That would be one bundle of 5 plus 4 extra marks.
2. The sport with the fewest tally marks is tennis.
Tennis shows only 2 tally marks, fewer than any other sport. Its row has just two single lines.
3. How many students chose swimming? 7.
Swimming has one bundle of 5 tally marks plus 2 extra marks. Counting them gives 5 plus 2 equals 7.
4. How many more chose soccer than tennis? 7.
Soccer has 9 tally marks and tennis has 2. Subtract to compare: 9 minus 2 equals 7.
5. Basketball and running together got 11 votes.
Basketball got 5 votes and running got 6 votes. Combining the groups: 5 plus 6 equals 11.
6. The total number of students who voted is 32.
Add the counts from every sport's tally row: 9 plus 5 plus 7 plus 3 plus 2 plus 6. That gives a total of 32 voters.
7. In a pictograph, the key tells what each picture stands for.
The key is a small note on a pictograph that explains how much each picture stands for. Without the key, you would not know if a picture means 1, 2, or more.
8. Swimming got 4 more votes than baseball.
Swimming had 7 votes and baseball had 3 votes. Subtracting to find the extra: 7 minus 3 equals 4.
9. Five tally marks are drawn as four lines with one diagonal through them.
To show 5 in a tally, you draw four upright lines and then a diagonal slash across them. The diagonal line closes the group of five so it is easy to count by fives.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
