Introduction to Multiplication — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. Skip count by 4s three times: 4, 8, 12.
Each jump in skip counting by 4s adds 4, so 8 + 4 gives 12 as the third number.
2. 3 x 6 equals 18.
3 x 6 means 6 + 6 + 6, which adds up to 18. You can also skip count: 6, 12, 18.
3. Skip count by 5s six times: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30.
Skip counting by 5s adds 5 each time, so after 25 comes 25 + 5 = 30.
4. 4 groups of 4 equals 16.
Four groups of 4 is 4 + 4 + 4 + 4, which totals 16. That is the same as 4 x 4.
5. Skip count by 3s five times: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15.
Skip counting by 3s adds 3 each jump, so 12 + 3 = 15.
6. 2 x 10 equals 20.
2 x 10 is two groups of 10, which is 10 + 10 = 20.
7. Skip count by 2s seven times: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14.
Each step of skip counting by 2s adds 2, so after 12 the next number is 12 + 2 = 14.
8. 6 groups of 3 equals 18.
Six groups of 3 is the same as 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3, which equals 18.
9. Skip count by 10s four times: 10, 20, 30, 40.
Skip counting by 10s adds 10 each jump, so 30 + 10 = 40.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
3 groups of 5
→ 15
16
4 groups of 3
→ 12
20
2 groups of 8
→ 16
12
5 groups of 4
→ 20
15
Multiply the number of groups by the size of each group: 3 x 5 = 15, 4 x 3 = 12, 2 x 8 = 16, and 5 x 4 = 20. Repeated addition gives the same totals.
