Measuring Length — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A marker is 5 inches. A glue stick is 4 inches. Together they are 9 inches.
To find the total length, add the two lengths together: 5 inches + 4 inches = 9 inches. When you put objects end to end, you add their lengths.
2. A ribbon is 20 cm. Cut off 8 cm. The ribbon is now 12 cm long.
When a piece is cut off, you subtract its length from the total: 20 cm - 8 cm = 12 cm. That is how much ribbon is left.
3. A straw is 8 inches. A spoon is 6 inches. The straw is 2 inches longer.
To compare two lengths, subtract the shorter from the longer: 8 inches - 6 inches = 2 inches. The straw is 2 inches longer than the spoon.
4. Order from longest to shortest: 15 cm, 22 cm, 10 cm. The longest is 22 cm.
When ordering from longest to shortest, find the biggest number first. Comparing 15, 22, and 10, the value 22 is the largest, so 22 cm is the longest.
5. A table is 4 feet long. In inches that is 48.
Each foot has 12 inches, so to convert feet to inches you multiply: 4 feet × 12 inches = 48 inches. The table is 48 inches long.
6. Two crayons are each 9 cm long. Placed end to end they measure 18 cm.
When you place items end to end, you add their lengths. Two crayons of 9 cm each give 9 + 9 = 18 cm, or you can multiply 9 × 2 = 18.
7. A jump rope is 72 inches long. That equals 6 feet.
To turn inches into feet, divide by 12 since each foot is 12 inches. 72 ÷ 12 = 6, so the jump rope is 6 feet long.
8. A notebook is 11 inches tall. A textbook is 14 inches tall. The difference is 3 inches.
The word difference means subtract the smaller from the larger: 14 inches - 11 inches = 3 inches. The textbook is 3 inches taller than the notebook.
9. Three paper clips are each 3 cm long. Lined up, they measure 9 cm total.
Three paper clips of the same length can be added up: 3 + 3 + 3 = 9 cm, or multiplied as 3 × 3 = 9 cm. Either way the line is 9 cm long.
