Place Value: Tens and Ones — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. 61 = 6 tens and 1 one.
In 61, the left digit is 6 and it sits in the tens place, meaning there are 6 groups of ten plus a single 1 one.
2. The value of the digit 2 in 27 is 20.
The 2 in 27 is in the tens place, so its true value is 2 tens, which equals 20.
3. 70 + 9 = 79.
The tens part of 79 is 70 and the ones part is 9. So the missing number that adds with 9 to make 79 is 70.
4. The number 88 has 8 tens and 8 ones.
Both digits in 88 are 8, but they mean different things: the left 8 stands for 8 tens (80) and the right 8 stands for 8 ones.
5. 46 is less than 64.
Compare the tens digits first: 4 tens (40) is smaller than 6 tens (60), so 46 is less than 64.
6. 9 tens and 2 ones = 92.
Nine tens equal 90 and adding 2 ones gives 92. Write the tens digit first, then the ones digit.
7. The ones digit in 15 is 5.
The ones digit is always the rightmost digit. In 15, the digit on the far right is 5.
8. 31 = 30 + 1.
Three tens make 30, and adding 1 one gives 31. The 3 lives in the tens place and the 1 lives in the ones place.
9. The digit 4 in 43 stands for 40.
The 4 in 43 is in the tens place, so it represents 4 groups of ten. Four tens is the same as 40.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
46
→ 40 + 6
80 + 2
82
→ 80 + 2
90 + 3
15
→ 10 + 5
40 + 6
93
→ 90 + 3
10 + 5
To write any two-digit number in expanded form, replace the tens digit with its full value and keep the ones digit the same: 46 becomes 40 plus 6, 82 becomes 80 plus 2, 15 becomes 10 plus 5, and 93 becomes 90 plus 3.
