Telling Time — Answer Key
Part A: Sort the Words
Sort each word or number into the correct category box.
1. Sort each time into before noon or after noon.
Before Noon (AM)
6:30 AM9:15 AM10:00 AM After Noon (PM)
2:00 PM7:30 PM4:15 PM AM times happen between midnight and 12:00 noon (the morning hours), and PM times happen between noon and midnight (afternoon and evening). The label after the time tells you which group it belongs in.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. 30 minutes after 4:00 is 4:30.
Adding 30 minutes to 4:00 keeps the hour the same and changes the minutes from 00 to 30, giving 4:30.
2. One hour after 6:00 AM is 7:00 AM.
One hour later means the hour number goes up by 1. Since 6:00 AM is in the morning, adding 1 hour stays in the AM and lands on 7:00 AM.
3. A digital clock shows the hour, then a colon, then the minutes.
A digital clock displays time as hour:minutes. The two digits to the right of the colon always tell how many minutes have passed since the hour.
4. One hour before 11:00 is 10:00.
One hour before means counting back by 1 hour. Subtracting 1 from 11 gives 10, so one hour before 11:00 is 10:00.
5. The numbers after the colon on a digital clock tell the minutes.
On a digital clock the colon separates two parts: the hour comes before it and the number of minutes past that hour comes after it.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. One hour after 3:00 PM is 4:00 PM.
True False
Adding 1 hour increases the hour number by 1, taking 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Both times are still in the afternoon, so the PM stays the same.
2. A digital clock that reads 8:30 shows half past 8.
True False
30 minutes is half of an hour (60 minutes), so 8:30 means 8 o'clock and a half hour past, which we say as half past 8.
3. 30 minutes after 11:30 is 12:30.
True False
Adding 30 minutes to 11:30 makes another half hour, which takes you to exactly 12:00, not 12:30.
4. 9:00 AM comes before 8:00 AM on the same day.
True False
Within the same day, smaller hour numbers in the morning come first. 8:00 AM happens an hour earlier than 9:00 AM.
