Telling Time — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. When the hour hand is on 3 and the minute hand is on 12, it is 3:00.
The hour hand on 3 tells us the hour is 3. The minute hand on 12 means zero minutes past, so the time is 3:00.
2. When the hour hand is between 8 and 9 and the minute hand is on 6, it is 8:30.
When the hour hand is between two numbers, we use the smaller number for the hour. The minute hand on 6 means 30 minutes, so the time is 8:30.
3. At 6:00, the hour hand points to 6.
At 6:00, the hour hand points directly to the number 6 on the clock face.
4. At 10:30, the minute hand points to 6.
At any half-hour time (:30), the minute hand always points to 6.
5. The hour hand moves from one number to the next in 1 hour.
It takes exactly 1 hour for the hour hand to move from one number to the next number on the clock.
6. Half past 2 means the same as 2:30.
Half past means 30 minutes after the hour. Half past 2 is 2:30.
7. At 12:00, both clock hands point to 12.
At exactly 12:00, both the hour hand and the minute hand point straight up to the number 12.
8. When the minute hand is on 12, the time is on the hour.
When the minute hand points to 12, zero minutes have passed, meaning the time is exactly on the hour.
9. At 7:30, the hour hand is between 7 and 8.
At 7:30, the hour hand has moved halfway between 7 and 8 because half the hour has passed.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
Hour hand on 5, minute hand on 12
→ 5:00
9:00
Hour hand between 1 and 2, minute hand on 6
→ 1:30
11:30
Hour hand on 9, minute hand on 12
→ 9:00
5:00
Hour hand between 11 and 12, minute hand on 6
→ 11:30
1:30
When the minute hand is on 12, the time is on the hour. When the minute hand is on 6, it is half past. The hour hand shows which hour it is.
