Telling Time — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. Quarter past 10 is the same as 10:15.
Quarter past means 15 minutes after the hour because one quarter of the 60-minute clock is 15 minutes. So quarter past 10 is 10:15.
2. At 5:15, the minute hand points to the 3.
Each clock number is 5 minutes apart. The number 3 is three steps from the top, which is 5 + 5 + 5 = 15 minutes.
3. 15 minutes after 8:00 is 8:15.
Adding 15 minutes to 8:00 changes only the minute portion: 00 + 15 = 15, so the new time is 8:15.
4. 30 minutes after 11:00 is 11:30.
Adding 30 minutes (a half hour) to 11:00 takes the minutes from 00 to 30 while the hour stays at 11, giving 11:30.
5. At 2:45, the minute hand points to the 9.
Each number on the clock equals 5 minutes. Counting 5s nine times gives 45, so the minute hand points to 9 when it is :45.
6. Quarter to 6 is the same as 5:45.
Quarter to 6 means 15 minutes before 6:00. Counting back 15 minutes from 6:00 lands on 5:45.
7. One hour after 12:00 PM is 1:00 PM.
After 12:00 PM (noon), the hour count starts over at 1. Adding 1 hour to 12:00 PM lands on 1:00 PM, still in the afternoon.
8. At 3:15, the hour hand is just past the 3.
Only 15 minutes have passed since 3:00, so the hour hand has only moved a small amount past the 3 — it is nowhere near 4.
9. Half past 12 is the same as 12:30.
Half past means 30 minutes after the hour because 30 is half of 60 minutes. Half past 12 is therefore 12:30.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
Quarter past 2
→ 2:15
11:15
Half past 7
→ 7:30
9:45
Quarter to 10
→ 9:45
7:30
Quarter past 11
→ 11:15
2:15
Quarter past adds 15 minutes to the named hour (2:15 and 11:15). Half past adds 30 minutes (7:30). Quarter to subtracts 15 minutes from the named hour, so quarter to 10 is 9:45.
