Weight & Capacity — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A scale marked in pounds shows the needle pointing between 0 and 2; the tick lines help you read to the nearest whole.
Scales have tick marks between the numbers. You use them to read the value to the nearest whole unit.
2. The measuring cup shows 1 cup filled to the halfway line; that means it holds half a cup.
If the line is in the middle of 1 cup, the liquid is half a cup, because half of one is one-half.
3. A kitchen scale shows 4 oz when a banana is placed on it. This tells the banana's weight.
Scales measure how heavy something is, which we call its weight, shown in ounces or pounds.
4. A measuring cup with markings at 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and 1 cup measures capacity.
Measuring cups show capacity, which is how much liquid a container can hold.
5. If the arrow on a pound scale rests exactly on the 5, the item weighs 5 pounds.
When an arrow lands on a number, that number is the weight. Here the arrow is on 5, so the weight is 5 pounds.
6. A scale that shows 16 ounces is showing the weight in ounces, the smaller unit.
Ounces are a smaller unit, and 16 ounces is a common reading equal to 1 pound on a kitchen scale.
7. On a measuring cup, the line labeled 1/2 is below the line labeled 1.
Half is smaller than a whole, so the 1/2 line sits below the 1 line on a measuring cup.
8. To read a scale, look at where the pointer stops.
The pointer stops on a number after the item sits still, and that number is the weight.
9. A measuring cup tipped to the side gives a wrong reading.
A tilted cup changes how liquid sits, so the reading is wrong unless the cup is level on a flat surface.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
Feather on a scale
→ about 1 ounce
about 1 ounce
Puppy on a scale
→ about 10 pounds
about 10 pounds
Half a measuring cup
→ 1/2 cup
1/2 cup
Full measuring cup
→ 1 cup
1 cup
Feathers are tiny so the scale reads about 1 oz. Puppies are small dogs so the scale reads about 10 lb. Half-full cups show 1/2 cup and full ones show 1 cup.
