Halloween Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A group of 6 ghosts met 7 more ghosts. There are 13 ghosts in all.
6 + 7 = 13. You can split 7 into 4 + 3: add 4 to 6 to make 10, then add 3 more to get 13.
2. Max had 15 candies and ate 8. He has 7 candies left.
15 - 8 = 7. Eating 8 out of 15 candies leaves 7 behind.
3. A creature that howls at the moon is a wolf.
Wolves are famous for howling up at the moon. Their howls can be heard from far away in the woods.
4. 9 bats flew in and 5 flew away. Now there are 4 bats.
9 - 5 = 4. When 5 bats leave, only 4 of the original 9 remain.
5. A carved pumpkin with a light inside is called a jack-o-lantern.
A jack-o-lantern is made by carving a pumpkin and placing a candle or light inside. The light makes the carved face glow in the dark.
6. 4 spiders plus 8 spiders equals 12 spiders.
4 + 8 = 12. You can also flip to 8 + 4, which is easier to count on from.
7. Sara collected 11 treats and gave away 3. She has 8 left.
11 - 3 = 8. Giving away 3 of 11 treats leaves Sara with 8.
8. The color of most pumpkins is orange.
The pumpkins you see at Halloween are nearly always bright orange. Orange is the color most people picture when they think of pumpkins.
9. 14 skeletons minus 6 skeletons equals 8 skeletons.
14 - 6 = 8. Taking 6 away from 14 leaves 8.
