Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Multiple Choice
Circle the best answer for each question.
1. Maria planted 13 seeds. Only 6 sprouted. How many did not sprout?
A) 19
B) 6
C) 8
D) 7
13 - 6 = 7. If 6 of the 13 seeds sprouted, then 7 did not sprout into plants.
2. Read: "The frog leaped from the lily pad into the pond." What does leaped mean?
A) Swam slowly
B) Jumped quickly
C) Crawled forward
D) Fell gently
'Leaped' means to jump suddenly and high. Frogs are famous for leaping with their strong back legs.
3. Ben found 7 worms in the morning and 9 worms in the afternoon. How many worms in all?
A) 15
B) 2
C) 16
D) 17
7 + 9 = 16. You can think: 7 + 3 makes 10, then 6 more makes 16 worms total.
4. What is the correct order of a butterfly life cycle?
A) Butterfly, egg, caterpillar, chrysalis
B) Egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly
C) Caterpillar, egg, butterfly, chrysalis
D) Chrysalis, butterfly, egg, caterpillar
A butterfly starts as an egg, hatches into a caterpillar, forms a chrysalis, and finally comes out as a butterfly. These four stages always happen in this order.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the correct answer on each line.
1. 14 minus 5 minus 3 equals 6.
Subtract in order: 14 - 5 = 9, then 9 - 3 = 6. You could also see 5 + 3 = 8, then 14 - 8 = 6.
2. Earthworms help the soil by making it loose.
As worms tunnel through dirt, they break it up so water and air can reach plant roots. Loose soil is better for plants than packed-down soil.
3. 8 plus 7 equals 15.
8 + 7 = 15. You can split 7 into 2 + 5: add 2 to 8 to make 10, then add 5 more to get 15.
4. The green color in leaves comes from chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll is a green substance inside leaf cells that soaks up sunlight. Without it, leaves would not be green and plants could not make food.
5. 16 minus 9 equals 7.
16 - 9 = 7. You can count back 9 from 16 or use the fact 9 + 7 = 16.
