Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Multiple Choice
Circle the best answer for each question.
1. A pond has 11 tadpoles. Then 4 more swim in. How many tadpoles are in the pond now?
A) 7
B) 14
C) 15
D) 16
11 + 4 = 15. Adding 4 new tadpoles to the 11 already in the pond makes 15 in all.
2. Read: "The monarch butterfly migrates south every fall." What does migrates mean?
A) Hides underground
B) Travels a long way
C) Spins a web
D) Builds a nest
'Migrates' means to move from one place to another, usually for food or warmer weather. Monarch butterflies fly thousands of miles south each fall.
3. Lily planted 16 seeds but only 9 sprouted. How many seeds did not sprout?
A) 25
B) 6
C) 8
D) 7
16 - 9 = 7. If 9 of the 16 seeds sprouted into plants, the other 7 stayed as seeds.
4. Which animal goes through metamorphosis in spring?
A) Dog
B) Goldfish
C) Frog
D) Parrot
Frogs start as eggs, hatch into tadpoles, and slowly grow legs and lungs to become frogs. Dogs, goldfish, and parrots do not change their body shape like this.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the correct answer on each line.
1. 7 plus 5 plus 6 equals 18.
Add in order: 7 + 5 = 12, then 12 + 6 = 18. You could also see 7 + 6 = 13, then 13 + 5 = 18.
2. Frogs lay their eggs in water.
Frog eggs need water to stay wet and safe. That is why you find them in ponds, streams, and puddles in spring.
3. 13 minus 6 equals 7.
13 - 6 = 7. You can count back 6 from 13: 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7.
4. A butterfly uses its long tongue called a proboscis to drink nectar.
A proboscis is a long, thin, curled-up tongue butterflies uncoil to reach deep inside flowers. It works like a drinking straw for nectar.
5. 8 plus 3 plus 5 equals 16.
Add in order: 8 + 3 = 11, then 11 + 5 = 16. You could also notice 3 + 5 = 8 (doubles), then 8 + 8 = 16.
