Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A seed needs water, sunlight, and soil to sprout.
Soil gives seeds a place to hold on and get nutrients as they sprout. Along with water and sunlight, soil is one of the three things plants need most.
2. 9 tulips plus 7 tulips equals 16 tulips.
9 + 7 = 16. You can think: 9 + 1 makes 10, then 6 more makes 16.
3. The part of a plant that takes in water from the soil is the root.
Roots grow down into the soil and soak up water like a straw. They also hold the plant in place so it does not tip over.
4. 15 ladybugs minus 6 ladybugs equals 9 ladybugs.
15 - 6 = 9. Taking 6 away from 15 leaves 9.
5. A caterpillar builds a chrysalis and becomes a butterfly.
Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar changes its whole body in a process called metamorphosis. When it comes out, it is a fully formed butterfly.
6. 8 bees plus 5 bees equals 13 bees.
8 + 5 = 13. You can think: 8 + 2 makes 10, then 3 more makes 13.
7. Plants make their own food using light from the sun.
Plants use sunlight plus water and air to make food in their leaves. This special process is called photosynthesis.
8. 14 daisies minus 8 daisies equals 6 daisies.
14 - 8 = 6. You can count back 8 from 14 to land on 6.
9. Spring rain helps flowers bloom and grow tall.
To 'bloom' means for a flower's bud to open up into a full flower. Rainwater soaks the soil, giving plants what they need to bloom.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
Roots
→ Take in water from the soil
Makes seeds for new plants
Stem
→ Carries water up from the ground
Carries water up from the ground
Leaves
→ Catch sunlight to make food
Catch sunlight to make food
Flower
→ Makes seeds for new plants
Take in water from the soil
Each plant part has its own job: roots drink up water, the stem sends water upward like a tube, leaves collect sunlight to make food, and flowers produce seeds so new plants can grow.
