Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. Robins return in spring to build nests for their eggs.
Birds weave nests out of twigs, grass, and leaves to keep their eggs safe. Robins are famous spring visitors because they arrive when the weather warms.
2. 6 frogs plus 8 frogs equals 14 frogs.
6 + 8 = 14. You can split 8 into 4 + 4: add 4 to 6 to make 10, then add 4 more to get 14.
3. April showers bring May flowers.
This famous rhyme means that April's heavy rain helps flowers bloom in May. The rain and warmth are what wake up spring flowers.
4. 12 chicks minus 5 chicks equals 7 chicks.
12 - 5 = 7. If 5 out of 12 chicks wandered off, 7 would still be there.
5. A rainbow appears after it rains on a sunny day.
Rainbows form when sunlight hits leftover raindrops still in the air. That is why you only see rainbows when it has been both rainy and sunny.
6. 7 plus 9 equals 16.
7 + 9 = 16. You can think: 7 + 3 makes 10, then 6 more makes 16.
7. Baby ducks are called ducklings.
A baby duck is called a duckling. They are yellow and fluffy when they first hatch and can swim right away.
8. 16 minus 7 equals 9.
16 - 7 = 9. You can count back 7 from 16: 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9.
9. In spring, the weather gets warmer and days get longer.
As Earth tilts toward the sun in spring, temperatures rise and daylight lasts longer. That is why spring feels warmer than winter.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
5 + 8
→ 13
14
12 - 4
→ 8
7
9 + 5
→ 14
8
16 - 9
→ 7
13
Work each problem: 5 + 8 = 13, 12 - 4 = 8, 9 + 5 = 14, and 16 - 9 = 7. Match each expression to the number that equals its answer.
