Spring Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. Tulips grow from bulbs planted in the ground.
A bulb is a round root that holds food for a plant. When bulbs are buried in the ground, tulips grow up from them each spring.
2. 11 daffodils plus 6 daffodils equals 17 daffodils.
11 + 6 = 17. You can count on from 11 by 6: 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17.
3. The part of a flower that insects land on is the petal.
Petals are the colorful parts that fan out around a flower. Their bright colors and smells help bees and butterflies find the flower.
4. 16 roses minus 8 roses equals 8 roses.
16 - 8 = 8. This is a doubles fact because 8 + 8 = 16, so half of 16 is 8.
5. Sunflowers always turn to face the sun.
Young sunflowers slowly turn during the day to follow the sun across the sky. This helps them catch as much sunlight as possible.
6. 9 violets plus 8 violets equals 17 violets.
9 + 8 = 17. You can think: 9 + 1 makes 10, then 7 more makes 17.
7. Spring rain fills up ponds and streams.
Streams are small flowing bodies of water. When heavy spring rain falls, ponds rise and streams flow faster and fuller.
8. 14 lilies minus 5 lilies equals 9 lilies.
14 - 5 = 9. Taking 5 away from 14 leaves 9.
9. Flowers use their bright colors to attract bees and butterflies.
Bees and butterflies see colors and fly to bright flowers for nectar. Flowers need them to spread pollen so new seeds can grow.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each spring flower to its common color.
Sunflower
→ Yellow
White with yellow center
Violet
→ Purple
Red or pink
Tulip
→ Red or pink
Purple
Daisy
→ White with yellow center
Yellow
Sunflowers are bright yellow with dark centers, violets are named for their purple color, tulips are often red or pink, and daisies have white petals with a yellow middle.
