Winter Holiday Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. Skip count by 2s: 10, 12, 14, 16, 18.
Skip counting by 2s adds 2 each time. After 16 comes 16 + 2, which is 18.
2. Rosa made 8 snow angels and then made 7 more. She made 15 snow angels total.
8 + 7 = 15. 'Total' means add all together: 8 snow angels plus 7 more makes 15.
3. When schools close because of heavy snow, it is called a snow day.
A 'snow day' is the special name for a school day that is cancelled because of heavy snow. Kids get to stay home and play in the snow.
4. 17 hot cocoa cups minus 9 hot cocoa cups equals 8 hot cocoa cups.
17 - 9 = 8. You can count back 9 from 17 or use the fact 9 + 8 = 17.
5. Skip count by 5s: 15, 20, 25, 30, 35.
Skip counting by 5s adds 5 each time. After 30 comes 30 + 5, which is 35.
6. Ben found 6 pinecones and his dad found 9. They found 15 pinecones in all.
6 + 9 = 15. 'In all' tells you to add: 6 pinecones plus 9 more makes 15 total.
7. A sled slides down a snowy hill.
Sleds use gravity to speed down slopes, so they need a hill to work. Flat ground would not let a sled slide.
8. Skip count by 10s: 30, 40, 50, 60.
Skip counting by 10s adds 10 each time. After 50 comes 50 + 10, which is 60.
9. 14 snowballs minus 6 snowballs equals 8 snowballs.
14 - 6 = 8. Taking 6 away from 14 leaves 8 snowballs.
