Winter Holiday Math & Reading — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. Skip count by 2s: 14, 16, 18, 20, 22.
Skip counting by 2s adds 2 each time. After 20 comes 20 + 2, which is 22.
2. Penguins waddle on ice because they cannot fly.
Even though penguins are birds, their wings are shaped for swimming, not flying. So they walk by waddling side to side on land.
3. 12 snowflakes plus 6 snowflakes equals 18 snowflakes.
12 + 6 = 18. You can count on from 12 by 6: 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18.
4. A thermometer measures the temperature outside.
A thermometer is a tool with numbers and a liquid or display that shows how hot or cold the air is. That reading is called temperature.
5. Skip count by 5s: 25, 30, 35, 40, 45.
Skip counting by 5s adds 5 each time. After 40 comes 40 + 5, which is 45.
6. 16 icicles minus 8 icicles equals 8 icicles.
16 - 8 = 8. This is a doubles fact because 8 + 8 = 16, so half of 16 is 8.
7. Baby penguins are called chicks.
All baby birds, including penguins, are called chicks. Penguin chicks are covered in soft, fluffy gray down when they hatch.
8. Skip count by 10s: 50, 60, 70, 80.
Skip counting by 10s adds 10 each time. After 70 comes 70 + 10, which is 80.
9. Amy caught 7 snowflakes and Zoe caught 8. They caught 15 snowflakes in all.
7 + 8 = 15. 'In all' tells you to add: 7 snowflakes plus 8 more makes 15 total.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
Frost
→ A thin layer of ice on a cold surface
Small balls of ice that fall from the sky
Sleet
→ Rain that freezes into ice as it falls
A light, brief snowfall
Flurry
→ A light, brief snowfall
Rain that freezes into ice as it falls
Hail
→ Small balls of ice that fall from the sky
A thin layer of ice on a cold surface
Each winter weather word has its own meaning: frost is the thin ice that coats cold objects, sleet is freezing rain, a flurry is a quick light snow, and hail is round ice pellets that fall from storms.
