Community Helpers — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A pilot flies an airplane to take people to faraway places.
Airplanes are the only vehicles that can carry big groups of people through the sky. Pilots are trained to steer them safely so travelers can cross states or oceans in just hours.
2. A paramedic rides in an ambulance to help people who are hurt.
Paramedics are called when someone has been injured and needs medical care right away. Their ambulance carries supplies so they can treat the hurt person on the way to the hospital.
3. A construction worker uses a crane to lift heavy things.
A crane is a tall machine with a long arm that can raise objects far too heavy for a person to carry, like steel beams and concrete blocks. Workers use it so buildings can go up without anyone getting hurt.
4. A truck driver drives a big truck to deliver packages to stores.
Truck drivers have a special license that lets them handle large trucks on the highway. Thanks to them, stores get fresh boxes of food, clothes, and toys to put on the shelves.
5. A tow truck driver helps move cars that are broken.
When a car breaks down, it cannot move on its own and might block traffic. A tow truck has a hook and chain to pull the broken car to a garage for repairs.
6. A train conductor makes sure the train stops at each station.
A station is the platform where passengers get on and off the train. The conductor watches the schedule so the train stops at every station and everyone can reach their stop.
7. A taxi driver takes passengers where they need to go.
Taxi drivers wait for riders who tell them an address. Then they drive the shortest route so their passengers can go straight to that spot in the city.
8. A ship captain steers a large boat across the ocean.
The ocean is the huge body of salt water that separates continents, and only a big ship can safely cross it. The captain uses maps and instruments to steer the boat all the way to the other side.
9. A helicopter pilot can fly straight up and hover in the air.
Helicopters have spinning blades on top that let them stay still in one spot high above the ground. This is called to hover, and it is useful for rescues where a plane could not land.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each community helper to the vehicle they use.
Paramedic
→ Ambulance
Patrol car
Pilot
→ Airplane
Fire truck
Firefighter
→ Fire truck
Ambulance
Police officer
→ Patrol car
Airplane
Paramedics ride in ambulances because they are built to carry hurt people with medical gear. Pilots fly airplanes, firefighters take fire trucks full of hoses and ladders, and police officers drive patrol cars with flashing lights to stop crime.
