Continents and Oceans — Answer Key
Part A: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. A globe is a round model of Earth.
A model is a small copy of something real, and a globe is a ball-shaped copy of our planet. Spinning a globe shows the same places you would see if you could look down at Earth from space.
2. The Pacific Ocean lies between Asia and the Americas.
The Pacific Ocean is the huge stretch of water that separates Asia from North and South America. It is so wide that planes take many hours to cross it.
3. North America is in the Western Hemisphere.
An imaginary line splits the globe into Eastern and Western halves, and North America falls on the western side. Europe and Asia are on the opposite side.
4. The continent of Antarctica is at the very bottom of the globe.
Antarctica wraps around the South Pole, which is the point at the very bottom of Earth. That is why maps often show it stretched along the bottom edge.
5. Europe and Asia share one large landmass called Eurasia.
Europe and Asia are not separated by an ocean, so together they form one giant landmass called Eurasia. The Ural Mountains are often used to mark where one ends and the other begins.
6. The Sahara Desert is found on the continent of Africa.
The Sahara stretches across the top of Africa and is the biggest hot desert in the world. It is full of sand, rocks, and very dry air.
7. Blue areas on a map usually stand for water.
Mapmakers color oceans, lakes, and rivers blue because real water often looks blue. That makes it easy to tell water apart from land.
8. South America is famous for the Amazon rain forest.
The Amazon rain forest covers a big part of South America and is packed with wet, tall trees, colorful birds, and rare animals. It gets rain almost every day.
9. The North Pole is at the very top of the globe.
The North Pole is the spot at the very top of Earth, right in the middle of the frozen Arctic Ocean. The South Pole is the matching spot at the bottom.
Part B: Matching
Match each item on the left to the correct answer on the right.
1. Match each item to its correct answer.
North America
→ Bordered by the Atlantic and Pacific
Home to the Amazon River
Europe
→ Contains France, Spain, and Germany
Bordered by the Atlantic and Pacific
South America
→ Home to the Amazon River
Covered in ice with no countries
Antarctica
→ Covered in ice with no countries
Contains France, Spain, and Germany
Each continent pairs with a clue about its geography. North America has an ocean on both sides, Europe holds those three famous countries, South America has the mighty Amazon, and Antarctica is iced over with no nations.
