Contractions — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
He will bring his lunch tomorrow, so hel'l share with me.
Corrected: He will bring his lunch tomorrow, so he'll share with me.
In Grade 3 writing, 'he'll' combines 'he' and 'will' with the apostrophe between 'he' and 'll', not between 'l' and 'l'.
2. Fix the sentence:
If it rains, wed stay inside and read books.
Corrected: If it rains, we'd stay inside and read books.
Grade 3 students learn 'we'd' is short for 'we would' and must include an apostrophe before the 'd' to be correct.
3. Fix the sentence:
They'l meet us at the park after school ends.
Corrected: They'll meet us at the park after school ends.
In Grade 3, 'they'll' stands for 'they will' and keeps both l's from 'will' with the apostrophe replacing 'wi'.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. I think you'll enjoy the new library book if you read it this weekend.
Grade 3 contraction 'you'll' means 'you will' and drops 'wi' from will.
2. She promised she'll call me right after her soccer practice today.
The Grade 3 contraction 'she'll' joins 'she' and 'will' with an apostrophe.
3. If I had extra time, I'd help you build a fort in the yard.
Grade 3 conditional contraction 'I'd' stands for 'I would' in this sentence.
4. He said he'd finish his homework before dinner so he could play.
In Grade 3 writing, 'he'd' means 'he would' and the apostrophe replaces 'woul'.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. In Grade 3, the contraction 'they'll' is short for 'they will'.
True False
The contraction 'they'll' combines 'they' and 'will' with the apostrophe replacing 'wi' in will.
2. The contraction 'we'd' can mean either 'we would' or 'we had' in a Grade 3 sentence.
True False
Grade 3 readers use context clues because 'we'd' can stand for 'we would' or 'we had' depending on the sentence.
3. In Grade 3, 'hell' with no apostrophe is the correct contraction for 'he will'.
True False
The correct Grade 3 contraction for 'he will' is 'he'll' with an apostrophe; 'hell' without one is wrong.
