Opinion Writing — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
Apples grow on trees in orchards.
Corrected: I think apples are the best fruit because they are crunchy and sweet.
The original sentence states a fact about where apples grow rather than sharing what the writer believes. A real opinion needs a feeling word like "I think" plus a personal reason such as their crunchy, sweet taste.
2. Fix the sentence:
I think painting is awesome because it just is.
Corrected: I think painting is awesome because you can mix colors and create anything you imagine.
Saying "because it just is" gives no real reason and does not convince anyone. A strong opinion needs a specific reason like mixing colors and creating anything you imagine.
3. Fix the sentence:
The ocean is a large body of salt water.
Corrected: I believe the ocean is the most amazing place because you can see dolphins and colorful fish.
The starting sentence is a science fact you can prove, not a personal view. Adding "I believe" plus the reason about dolphins and colorful fish turns it into a real opinion.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. I believe science is the best subject because you get to do cool experiments.
The word "because" introduces a reason, and doing cool experiments is the reason science is called the best subject. It links the writer's opinion to their support.
2. Playing outside is good for you. Also, fresh air helps you feel happy and strong.
After one reason has been given, the word "Also" signals that another supporting reason is coming next. It tells the reader the writer is stacking up evidence for their opinion.
3. I think everyone should try swimming because it is fun and keeps your body healthy.
Use "because" when you want to tell the reader why something is true. Here it shows that fun and good health are the reasons everyone should try swimming.
4. Also, learning to swim can keep you safe around water.
Starting a sentence with "Also" tells the reader you are adding one more reason on top of the ones before it. Water safety becomes the new bonus reason for learning to swim.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. The sentence "I feel that winter is the best season" is an opinion.
True False
The phrase "I feel that" shows a personal feeling, and the word "best" shares a judgement that someone else might disagree with. Both signal an opinion rather than a fact.
2. An opinion paragraph does not need any reasons to support it.
True False
Without reasons, an opinion sounds like a guess and does not convince the reader. Every opinion paragraph must include reasons that explain why the writer believes what they do.
3. The word also can be used to add another reason for your opinion.
True False
"Also" is a linking word writers use when they already gave one reason and want to bring in a second one. It helps your opinion paragraph stack multiple reasons together.
