Prepositions — Answer Key
Part A: Fix the Sentence
Each sentence has an error. Rewrite it correctly on the line.
1. Fix the sentence:
The book is in the table.
Corrected: The book is on the table.
We use 'on' for something that rests on a surface, and 'in' for something inside a container.
2. Fix the sentence:
The dog hid behind under the bed.
Corrected: The dog hid under the bed.
A prepositional phrase needs just one preposition; using two prepositions together is incorrect.
3. Fix the sentence:
The ball rolled between the two chair.
Corrected: The ball rolled between the two chairs.
The preposition 'between' needs a plural noun or two named nouns after it to make sense.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the missing word or number on each line.
1. The cat is sleeping under the warm blanket.
'Under' shows that the cat is below or covered by the blanket, which fits the meaning.
2. The picture hangs on the wall in my Grade 3 room.
'On' is the correct preposition when something is attached to or touching a surface like a wall.
3. My pencil is in the desk drawer.
'In' shows that something is inside an enclosed space, like a drawer or box.
4. The bird flew over the tall tree.
'Over' shows movement above and across, which matches how a bird flies above a tree.
Part C: True or False?
Read each statement. Circle True or False.
1. In the Grade 3 sentence 'The frog is on the rock,' the word 'on' is a preposition.
True False
'On' shows the location of the frog in relation to the rock, so it is a preposition.
2. The word 'happy' is a preposition in Grade 3 grammar.
True False
'Happy' is an adjective that describes a feeling; prepositions show location, time, or direction.
3. The preposition 'between' works well when talking about only one object in Grade 3 sentences.
True False
'Between' shows the position of something with two or more objects, not just one object.
