Bar Graphs and Pictographs — Answer Key
Part A: Multiple Choice
Circle the best answer for each question.
1. A pictograph shows Swimming=9, Soccer=6, Dance=4, Art=7 symbols. Key: each symbol = 5. What is the total?
A) 120
B) 130
C) 140
D) 110
Add the symbols first: 9 + 6 + 4 + 7 = 26. Then multiply by the key: 26 x 5 = 130.
2. A bar graph shows Mon=20, Tue=35, Wed=15, Thu=30, Fri=25. How many more books were sold on Tuesday than Wednesday?
A) 15
B) 20
C) 25
D) 10
Tuesday's bar shows 35 and Wednesday's bar shows 15. Subtracting, 35 - 15 = 20 more books on Tuesday.
3. A pictograph uses a key of 4. Dogs shows 3 full symbols and one half symbol. How many dogs are there?
A) 12
B) 16
C) 14
D) 10
Three full symbols are 3 x 4 = 12, and a half symbol is half of 4, which is 2. Together that gives 12 + 2 = 14 dogs.
4. A bar graph shows Red=30, Blue=20, Green=25. What is the combined total for Red and Green?
A) 50
B) 55
C) 45
D) 60
Read both bars and add them: Red's 30 plus Green's 25 makes 30 + 25 = 55 in total.
Part B: Fill in the Blank
Write the correct answer on each line.
1. A pictograph shows Apples=8, Bananas=5, Cherries=6 symbols (key=10). The total fruit sold is 190.
First add the symbols: 8 + 5 + 6 = 19. With a key of 10, multiply 19 x 10 = 190 pieces of fruit.
2. A bar graph shows Feb=25 and Mar=30. Together they equal 55.
Add the two bars directly because they are already the actual values: 25 + 30 = 55.
3. To show 35 on a pictograph where each symbol equals 5, you draw 7 symbols.
Divide the total by the key to find symbols. 35 divided by 5 is 7, so you draw 7 symbols.
4. On a bar graph, the tallest bar shows 40 and the shortest shows 10. The difference is 30.
Subtract the shortest from the tallest: 40 - 10 = 30 is the difference between the two bars.
5. A pictograph shows 4 full symbols and one half symbol with a key of 2. The total is 9.
Four full symbols equal 4 x 2 = 8, plus half a symbol equals 1, so the total is 8 + 1 = 9.
